Why include demonstrations?
Online demonstrations are often used in the initial presentation phase of the teaching and learning process. Often they are able to show processes and systems which cannot easily or safely be seen. Sometimes they facilitate learners' understanding of occurances that cannot actually be physically seen. Another advantage is that they allow the learner to view and review the demonstrations a number of times.
Features
- online demonstrations are often animated
- often show a three dimensional view
- can include audio and video enhancements
- often allow the learner to control the progress through the demonstration
- allows for repeated viewing
- demonstrations do not usually allow for much learner decision making (see Virtual Laboratories and Simulations).
Integrating demonstrations
Often demonstrations are available on the web. Before designing your own you should search for examples which may be able to be used in your teaching program. Check with the copyright statement on their web site and ensure you can link to the site before making it available to your students.
Design steps
Designing online demonstrations requires the teacher to:
- clarify the components and scope of the demonstration
- ensure appropriate sequence
- develop a storyboard of the final demonstration
- commission multimedia developers to build the interaction
- test and evaluate the demonstration
- plan for the inclusion of the demonstration into the teaching and learning program
- prepare learning activities around the demonstration. This may involve prediction exercises prior to the demonstration and follow up comprehension activities such as quizzes, crosswords, matching exercises and sequencing.
Assessment
Demonstrations are generally used at the content presentation stage of learning. They do not usually present many opportunities for assessment. However some of the comprehension activities listed above may be used for assessment purposes. They may, however be used to provide content and knowledge that underpins subsequent assessment tasks.
Technical notes
Often online demonstrations will require the end user to have plug-ins (Flash, Shockwave, audio and video) installed on their computers. Increasingly these plug-ins are standard on computer systems but you need to make sure that your learners can download any software that is required to make the demonstration run.
Skills
The development of multimedia demonstrations generally requires higher level development skills although some technologies such as CaptureCAMT-PRO can be effectively used by the lower end developer. It is often easier to access existing demonstrations and incorporate these into your teaching and learning design.

Adobe Flash is a popular application for creating multimedia activities integrating video, text, audio, and graphics into interactive demonstrations. It creates small files that are readily downloaded. The majority of current web users, (greater than 97%), have the ability to view Flash via the free Flash player. The Flash authoring tool requires very specific skills and often requires a dedicated multimedia developer to create effective interactive excercises. For this reason, creating and customising Flash activities may be outside the scope of many teaching practitioners who will need to storyboard their ideas and then commission the development. - Director
