In 2001, a group of 11 practitioners from three vocational colleges in South Australia won a LearnScope Innovations project to explore the potential of web-based role-play simulations for soft skills training. LearnScope is another highly successful ANTA national professional development initiative which focuses on team learning.

The team designed and facilitated three web-based roleplays. We were mentored by two talented roleplay designers, Roni Linser and Albert Ip, the developers of the Fablusi roleplay software.

Our findings were both enlightening and sobering. We discovered that designing and moderating online role-plays was challenging and we came away with four key lessons

Key learning:

  1. Experience a simulation before you design one
  2. Design with a team
  3. Moderation is a challenge with many levels of complexity
  4. Debriefing the simulation is absolutely critical.
